Song Review: MOMOLAND - BBoom BBoom (Japanese Version)

MOMOLAND have set off to conquer the Japanese market with their first Japanese single BBoom BBoom. The song is the Japanese version of their Korean hit BBoom BBoom released early this year. The song and MV were released yesterday where as the physical single will be released in Japan on the 13th of June 2018. For a review on the original Korean song, please check out my review of MOMOLAND's 3rd Mini Album: Great!

The Japanese version of BBoom BBoom has the same tune as the Korean version. In live performances of the song, the girls would shout 'Great!' which was not featured in the Korean release. This time, the Great has been added to the song which has divided some fans. Some enjoy the addition whilst others aren't too sure about the addition. Personally I think it's quite fun and many fans were yelling Great anyway because they were used to it from the live performances. The girls pronunciation of the Japanese lyrics is superb an the flow of the lyrics is great in the verses, choruses not so much. I feel that the chorus works better with the Korean lyrics. The song keeps in most of the original lyrics, mainly the English ones such as the 'rendezvous' in the first chorus.

Now can we please talk about the rap in the song? That part was a huge part of the original song, but I can't explain what happened in the Japanese version. It seems they turned the  rap in English. Whilst it sounds amazing, it just kinda defeats the purpose of releasing a Japanese version but having an English section. Still sounds great, just a weird choice. Also can we get an English version of BBoom BBoom after that move? Please and thank you!

Honestly I can't decide which version I prefer more. I love the Korean version and I feel that one is a bit more smooth and put together. The Japanese lyrics don't flow as well with the beat of the song and then the rap is entirely in English. I'll just have to wait and see once I get the album to see which one I end up listening to more. I usually prefer Japanese versions of Korean songs, so it's weird I'm not 100% sure with this one.

Now onto the MV. The budget was definitely a step ahead of the original Korean version and the locations are beautiful. Fans are noting this MV is miles ahead of the original, but the Korean song is better. Whilst the MV is gorgeous, there is just too much going on. The camera never really stays in one place for more than two seconds and there are constant jump cuts. In some of the dancing scenes, some of the girls aren't even in the frame and that kinda annoyed me. The MV has a number of scenes and outfits and I felt the beach wear ones would've have been enough for the MV instead of adding in the extra hotel scene one. The MV would've been better if took this approach; first part is with the colour tees and pirate ships scenes, next is the white tees with denim shorts scenes then finish with the white dresses scenes in the forest/beach. Then slot the dance scenes on the beach in as well. That's like your typical MV layout and gives the groups enough outfits to wear for promo and album covers that are shown in the MV. Can we please let the girls wear those stunning white dresses more, it's such a refreshing change from their normal concept.

Another thing with the MV is that I felt that the dance was a bit flat. The girls were probably quite tired from promoting the song so much in Korea for so long, so that might be the reason. I just noticed in some parts that the dance wasn't as energetic as the original and felt flat. Even in the rap part with Daisy and Jooe, the moves weren't as good as the original. The MV features some great shots of our Meme queen Jooe doing her Great dance!

Overall, I'd give the Japanese version of BBoom BBoom a 4.5 out of 5 stars. It's not as perfect as the original, but still a fun upbeat song to listen and dance to. Personally I prefer the Korean MV as it's more fun and whilst the Japanese one is beautiful, it just it too over the place. Hoping we get an official dance version of the MV, but one isn't listed for release on the DVD unfortunately. Looking forward to getting a copy of the physical single and future Japanese releases from the group. I'm intrigued to hear what original Japanese songs the group will come up, hopefully something unique and upbeat like their normal tracks.

BBoom BBoom is scheduled for release in Japan on the 16th of June 2018. The single will be released in three versions; Regular CD Only, Limited Edition A CD+DVD and Limited Edition B CD+Photobook. All versions will come with event tickets for use in Japan only. I'm planning on getting the Limited Edition B at the moment for the photobook. The Regular CD Only version doesn't have any special bonus tracks so no need to get that version over the other ones. The cover for the Limited Edition A version is my favourite! I'm hoping the photobook includes photos of all the outfits from the MV as the colourful tee ones are so cute. Here are the album covers of each version:

Limited Edition A CD+DVD

Limited Edition B CD+Photobook

Regular CD Only

I'll leave you with another GIF of the always entertaining Jooe. Have you noticed that I realised I can insert GIF's into posts? Anticipate lots of GIFs in posts in the future, sorry not sorry haha. Credit to the lovely makers of these gifs, found a few on forums and gfycat.
