Imagine my surprise when I was browsing through the e-shop the other day and came across the perfect game for me. Model Debut 4!!! The English port of the game has been released and honestly rather quick as the Japanese one only came out in late November. The English version was released on the e-shop on the 11th of December and my motivation for getting through a busy day at work the next day was that I could go home & play the game. Then it took forever to download and I was too tired haha. So I ended up playing it for the first time yesterday. Excited to play the game in English as the previous two I have the Japanese version and won't have to do any translating this time. For reference, the game was $64.50 AUD on the Australian e-shop and I brought the DLC for about $4.50 as well which is just one item.

First thing I noticed about the game is the art style and graphics are way different from the previous ones. Very realistic and modern looking. Lots of menus to read through at the beginning of the game about what each menu and controls are. Basically they are the same as the previous game and I like how quickly you can move between each tab with the L+R buttons.
Starting off creating my character and there was lots of customisation for just the face! Some were nice and others had not many good options in my opinion. Like I disliked nearly all the eyes and it would've been nice to adjust the angle of them more. That would've fixed my problem if I could rotate it how I wanted. Love how you can pick the eyelashes options as I like lashes on both parts of the eyelid. Now for the big new addition to the Model Debut series - darker skin tones! The new game has a wide range of skin tones and this is a wonderful addition. There was some nice pink under toned skin tones that I almost picked. I totally forgot the change the lipstick colour on my character as I was super tired after work but I can always do it later.
Just like previous games, there is a wide variety of hair styles and I found it impossible to choose one! The buns hairstyle was cute and I almost went with it but decided on my usual long hair look I often choose in this game. Forget to even look at the hair colours options however this is pretty close to my normal hair, just a bit lighter.
The make-up options are my favourite thing in the game so far as I'm a big lover of make-up in real-life. There are way more customisation options that previous games and you can even change the intensity of the colour. AMAZING!!! And did I mention the glitter?!? OMG the game lets you wear eye glitter which is my number one thing as I always wear eye glitter. Plus you can see it really well when your character is wearing it. Not a fan of the eyebrow colours that come default and hoping to unlock more that match my style.
So this is a new installment to the Model Debut series - customising clothes! I swear they looked at Fashion Dreamer and went 'let's put that in the next game!'. Seems like a cool feature and it would be ideal when you want to create items to match your own items. You can give items you customise tags as well and the game encourages you to use them in jobs. Here are some screenshots of my terrible job making a top. I wanted to make the long sleeve part transparent but it didn't work out that way so it's more a dark green tone.
The game gives you a selection of default items to dress your character up in during the character creation section. Most were ones that I remember from the other games and it's going to take me ages to get use to this new game style. I'm so used to what items looked like in the previous games so it's weird seeing them look quite different. There are some new cute accessories that I loved like this hair clip which is very trendy. I often see j-pop idols wear this style of clips.
Okay now onto the story portion of the game. The main story of this one is that you join your uncle's struggling modelling agency and help it become more successful. Well just successful really as they are not doing to good money wise and don't have many models on their books. Just like the earlier games you will complete jobs as well as manage other models in the agency. After meeting with your uncle, it was time to complete the first photoshoot which is for the agency.
I was shocked to see how many new faces they added to the pose options. And why are so many of them so strange looking? Stacks of them are either angry, mouth out, looking sad or weird. I swear there was only a small section of cute or happy looking ones. Or ones that had the eyes open.
You can now blur the background in photos which is kind of cool! I think that would look awesome on certain backgrounds like the ones that are photos. I went with this cute pink inspired photo for the first shoot and added some cute stickers. Haven't seen where the photos are all saved yet as I didn't play that far into the game. Probably some portfolio or something.
Headed over to the magazine to complete my first actual job! The theme was white blouse/button up with a white skirt. I made this interesting looking outfit which I felt was rather baby-doll inspired. There was another top and skirt I wanted to use but it didn't have buttons so I wanted to stick to the theme. For the photo, I went with a fun pose and sparkling background. After this, the game will explain the rank system and goal to rank up by completing jobs. So much lower than my Model Debut 3 level which I'm at Level A and I'm super behind in screenshots so they haven't been posted on the blog yet. I'll explain that more in a moment.
I did check out the shopping area after completing the job but we literally did nothing so I didn't any screenshots. So at least that tells me that you can unlock more items in the game. I was wondering when it talked about customising that maybe it limited the items. Briefly meet another model at the agency and she was quite rude. I totally understand it though because I've just showed up as her new manager out of nowhere. Honestly I would be kind of annoyed as well if that happened to me.
One DLC has already been released for the game and is available on the e-shop. The item is a Elegant Furisode and costs $4.50 AUD. I did purchase it and will talk about it in another post once I work through the introduction section of the game. It is wonderful that there will be extra items for the game and hopefully we will see more in the future.
And that is all for this first play journal of Model Debut 4. Feels so weird calling it that as I believe they have dropped the #nicola title for the English version. My goal was to finish Model Debut 3 before the fourth one came out and I got pretty far! At the moment I'm almost at the top rank however I got busy with work and then bam, the new game came out. So I will post both games simultaneously on the blog. Rather excited to play more of the game and it was great to see it get an English port so quickly!
